Egypt median o/n interbank rate rises to 11.575 pct

The median overnight interbank rate on the Egyptian pound was slightly higher at 11.575 percent on Tuesday compared with 11.55 percent on Monday, with a majority of deals made for longer periods, brokers said.

Three out of 10 banks contacted by Reuters reported overnight deals, while six dealt for periods up to two weeks.

The median one-week rate reported was 11.64 percent, rising to 11.65 for two-week deals.

In recent days mostly overnight deals had been reported.

Many brokers said the start of a fresh reporting period for reserves of the Egyptian currency had encouraged lenders to seek higher rates, while central bank deposit auctions and settlements dried up only some excess liquidity.

'Most of the banks don't have a liquidity problem at the moment, so there is no high demand,' one broker said.

The central bank accepted 19 billion pounds out of 26 billion pounds offered in a one-week deposit auction on Tuesday, at an average rate of 11.601 percent.

Four deals were also reported for eight and nine days, at 11.65 and 11.64 percent respectively. These deals end on Dec 25, when the central bank will meet to decide on rates.

'I'm not making any deals after this, because I am expecting the rate to go down,' one dealer said.

The Egyptian pound depreciated to 5.5273 pounds to the dollar by 12:00 GMT, from Sunday's closing weighted average of 5.5248. One forex trader attributed that to foreign investors exiting the stock market.
